Yeah, you. Wanna check out something a little different next Thursday night? Go read this, and then come watch me moderate a panel discussion on social media and jobs.

Did you enjoy part 1 and part 2 of How Not To Suck at Interviewing for a Job? Well, part 3 is now live.

Were you at our event last Thursday night? If so, you may have discovered some of the same cool finds I did. If not, you might want to read about them here.

Catch our note about Denise Ilitch Designs wanting to help Michigan Military brides by setting them up with jewelry on their wedding day? No? Go read this.

Been paying attention to our LinkedIn group, and all of the conversations taking place? You should be.

The devil’s in the details…so let’s dive in…

Last Thursday’s event at Rochester Mills was really great on a number of levels. More new faces. More new people. New businesses looking to get the word out about themselves and their offerings. People looking to branch out and make new connections. Some great conversations about the industry in general here in the area. Check out a quick summary of some items of note by reading this entry – http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3148/a-few-cool-finds-from-last-night/

Now, our next event isn’t until March 22nd. And we know that’s a long ways away. So if you start to miss us too much, or fear that you might, you can always make plans to hit this event, taking place next Thursday (March 1st), where you can watch me attempt to maintain my composure as I moderate a panel discussion around “Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee“…and you can watch Bob and Jeff distract and make faces at me the entire time trying to make me lose it, as well as what I’m almost certain will be a good deal of banter and post-panel mocking of me. Good times. If you’re confused as to how it comes to pass that I’m “moderating” anything, or just to get the details on the event, go read this – http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3154/using-social-media-to-find-your-next-positionemployee/

We had so much fun with, and gotten really good feedback about, part 1 and part 2 of How Not To Suck at Interviewing for a Job that part 3 is now live out at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3159/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-3/

Denise Ilitch Designs is doing something very cool, and wants to help Michigan Military brides on their wedding day by setting them up with some jewelry on their wedding day. Pretty nice of them, and you can catch the details and information on how to get in on it by reading http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3136/denise-ilitch-designs-helping-michigan-military-brides/

Pre-Registration is now open for the Day of Azure, and it’s only $10 if you register before March 5th, so why not go find out what evil plans Microsoft has for the cloud? Registration and other details can be found at http://www.dayofazure.com/

Which brings us to our LinkedIn group.

As of the time I’m writing this, there are 70+ jobs sitting there waiting to be looked at and scooped up, not to mention some solid conversations taking place about everything from Google’s privacy policy to whether or not we should cave and do nametags at our casual networking events instead of only for our Pink Slip Parties. As always, your feedback and input is what helps shape what this group is and does, so hop in and chime in http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Detroitnetorg-Detroit-Networking-Events-IT-91763

Now about those jobs. Like I mentioned a few sentences ago, there are quite a few posted at the moment, and rather than dump them all into this week’s blast, I’m going to keep it simple and encourage you to just dive in yourself if you’re interested. Help desk folks to DBAs, junior to senior developers of just about every flavor and language…there’s someone looking to hire you right now. Seriously. Like right now.

So, again, get yourself into the group at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Detroitnetorg-Detroit-Networking-Events-IT-91763 and we’ll see you there.

Regards,

Congratulations, you’ve made it past the first hurdle.

You’ve gotten past the gatekeepers, resume screeners, candidate tracking systems, and have gotten a call or email that someone would actually like to talk to you about hiring you for a job that they have open.

So Dave did a phenomenal job with part 1 and part 2 of “How not to suck at Interviewing for a Job” but as things happen in the world, things change and I wanted to add a couple things I thought were common sense, but I find out they are not…

1. Don’t drop the F-bomb in an interview.

Yeah, I thought this was pretty common knowledge, but as I find out…not so much.

For the sake of public mockery, I will keep the names out of it, but in short, I connected a friend of mine to a very well respected recruiter and good friend of Detroitnet.org since I thought my friend would be an ideal fit for a position they were looking for.

This position would have been life changing for this person, considering their career path to date has been lackluster, however he/she could have relished in this “break”.

Well, as it turns out, he nailed the first interview, killed it. If it wasn’t for protocol, they would have hired him/her on the spot. But he/she needed to interview with 3 more peers to make everything official.

Peer 1, nailed it.

Peer 2, did great.

Peer 3…Peer 3 my friend thought was a beer buddy and dropped the F— word. The word. The queen mother. The big kahuna.

And in one fell swoop, it was nice knowing you.

2. Use spell check.

Again, thought it was common sense. Thought this was pretty much general knowledge in the business world. Look for all words with a red underline, right click, and voila! The right spelling!

But no.

I realize everyone’s grammar sucks these days. I could understand (or maybe not) you’re/your, their/they’re/there because spell check doesn’t catch it.

But “opportunity”?

Really? The one thing you are getting and you MISSPELL it?!

You sir, as they say, get the finger.

3. Write and email a 30-60-90 day plan a week after your final interview.

So you interviewed with the recruiter, the hiring manager, 3 peers and the hiring manager again. What is going to set you apart?

A 5-6 page business plan. In Powerpoint, with their logo, or even better – use Google to find their corporate template if they are big enough of a company.

Outline your skills, a relationship map, what you hope to accomplish after 30, 60 and 90 days and then sum up your skills.

This my friends is the best thing you could ever do if you want to land a job you really want. It shows you have initiative, it relays your presentation and professional ability and it shows you will go the extra mile to get what you want.

I think you have more than enough ammunition now not to suck at a job interview. Our work here is done, you may now go out into the world…

Until next time.

So, this ought to be entertaining, if nothing else.

I’ve been asked to moderate a panel discussion next Thursday night (March 1st) on Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee.

I know, I know…it’s not often that someone thinks of me when it comes to anything involving the word “moderate”, but…well…it kind of makes sense.

See, here’s how this works…

I’ve known Sola for a while now, and she runs a networking group called “Social Media Is A Party”. She also has her hands in a few other enterprises, but this is the important one for the purposes of this discussion.

We’ve talked numerous times over the past two years about working together on an event, or joining forces for an event, or just figuring out a way to help each other out along the way. So, when she said she needed someone with an IT background who uses social media extensively to moderate a panel of people discussing using social media to find a job or hire someone…

…well, I’ve got an IT background…

…and, well, I’m always spouting off on our blog or Facebook or Twitter about something or other…

…and I just got done telling everyone why they’re not a “social media expert“…

…and this is a pretty solid group we’ve got running here, built exclusively through social media and word of mouth…

…and people do keep finding jobs and hiring through this group…

…and, what’s that? Someone with a sense of humor? Well, I’d like to think out Don’t Be That Guy and How Not To Suck entries make at least a passable attempt at using humor more often than not…

…and, let’s be honest. It’s not like I’m shy.

So…yeah, let’s do this.

And that’s how your friendly neighborhood geek with a mouth and a half winds up as the moderator for a panel discussion entitled “Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee”.

Now, who’s on this panel discussion that I’m moderating? You’ve got:

Matt Mosher, CEO of hiredMYway.com

Kelly LaVaute, Social Media Manager at Quicken Loans

Collin LaLonde, President of Talent Driven Executive Search

Yelena Crawford, Brand Manager at Pink Pump & P2

Jon Gunnells, Social Media Planner at Campbell-Ewald

Elena Mueller, Recruiter at Team Detroit

…and so there you have it. Ought to be an interesting night. And if you’ll notice below, they left almost two hours after the panel discussion for you to tell me what a sellout I am, or just to critique and mock my performance afterwards over drinks. Isn’t that nice? I thought so.

So, the details:

Okay, so now that I’ve had a couple cups of coffee and my head’s not quite as fuzzy as it was earlier this morning…I wanted to recap a few conversations that were had last night.

As I mentioned earlier on, the group dynamic is shifting yet again…which is great. Sure, there are still job seekers. Sure, there are still recruiters. But more and more we’re getting back to the foundation of what Detroitnet.org always was – networking. So to have folks from companies showing up last night just looking to make business contacts, as well as more people just looking to do the same and expand their network in the industry a bit…awesome.

So let’s talk about a few of those cool finds from last night…

SoBuzzMe (SOcial BUZZ MEdia…get it?) is a startup that offers outsourced IT support, cloud services, and digital marketing. Definitely start up, and in the early stages, and born out of a story that a lot of folks are familiar with – jobs eliminated, and it’s time to create your own opportunity. Good for them. You can check them out over at http://sobuzzme.com/

LookUpDetroit…well, it looks like it wants to be a portal for all things Detroit. I clicked around a bit this morning, and it has potential. You can poke around and make your own decision by going to http://lookupdetroit.com/

Now, possibly the coolest conversation last night was with a startup named Are You A Human? Phenomenal. We all hate CAPTCHAs, don’t we? And, more and more…they don’t work. And, more and more…when they do work, they work too well, and even an actual human being sitting down and reading it can’t decipher it and actually make it through the gate. So, enter Are You A Human? Instead of CAPTCHA, why not have a cutesie little game embedded in your site for form submissions, etc., that a user has to play before they can continue? Nothing too heavy, nothing too time consuming…but still serves the purpose you’re looking to achieve while making it a little more fun (and less painful) for your users. Very cool stuff. Check it out at http://areyouahuman.com/

On top of that, there were, of course, the usual suspects when it comes to recruiting, but there were also a lot of new faces in that same realm that showed up, too. Including quite a few companies looking to direct-hire.

The short answer is this – IT is back. It’s not “back to 1999 levels” or anything…but it’s definitely turned around and positive again. High demands for .Net, Java and PHP developers. Oracle and MSSQL DBAs. Quality Assurance and testing peeps.

If you’re in any of those areas and even remotely thinking of looking…now’s a good time.

One of these days, we really are going to have to get better about remembering to take pictures at our events.

Big shout out and “thank you” to Rochester Mills Brewing Company for hosting last night’s event. We couldn’t possibly be any happier with the space, the service, the environment, or any other factor, really.

And, of course, a thank you to everyone that made it to the event last night. Lots of new faces, and we’re starting to see more and more businesses looking to branch out and make contacts in the industry…always a positive.

I would definitely plan on us having more events there in the future…that’s a no-brainer.

In other news, Denise Ilitch Designs is doing something very cool to help Michigan Military Brides, and we’re naturally all about helping get the word out.

Then there’s the gaggle of random events taking place tonight and throughout the weekend that we thought you might want to know about…

Just as a quick reminder to start things off, our next event will be taking place on Thursday, March 22nd back at the familiar stomping grounds of the back room of the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. As always, details on our entire schedule of upcoming events (and we have March, April and May booked…still working on June, since that might be a Pink Slip Party…) can be found here on our site at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/

As mentioned a few sentences ago, Denise Ilitch Designs is looking to help out some Michigan Military Brides this March and April by supplying them with some incredibly jewelry on their wedding day. For details, check out the story here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3136/denise-ilitch-designs-helping-michigan-military-brides/

Now…let’s start talking about those other events.

I teased you a little bit on Wednesday about an upcoming event where I’ll be moderating a panel discussion. Well, that event is “Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee“. Now, a disclaimer – this is NOT “our” event, in that it’s not a Detroitnet.org event. I was just asked to be a moderator for the panel, and agreed to do so. This is being put on by someone else, and so it’s not being run like one of our events – i.e., “there’s a cover charge to get in to this one”. So, if you don’t want to go, I completely understand. That takes place on March 1st at Dino’s Lounge in Ferndale, and starts at 6:30pm.

However, given that I’m involved, and there’s alcohol involved…well, it ought to be an entertaining evening to say the least…

If anyone out there has some free time tonight, someone needs to do a scouting mission for us and find out what this Penguicon thing is all about during their “bring a friend” event where you can find out about them. They bill themselves as an “open source and science fiction” convention…and I like open source. And I like science fiction. But I’m already overbooked for Friday night, as are Bob and Jeff…so, again, anyone with some free time that can head over to the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn…most appreciated. You can find the details here: http://www.penguicon.org/CMS/?p=355

Pre-Registration is now open for the Day of Azure, and it’s only $10 if you register before March 5th, so why not go find out what evil plans Microsoft has for the cloud? Registration and other details can be found at http://www.dayofazure.com/

If you like sports, you might want to check out 97.1fm’s sportsfest event taking place on Saturday. Free admission (well, you have to pay for parking, but there’s no admission fee for the event itself), athletes from all of the Detroit teams will be there signing autographs and participating in panel discussions…should be pretty cool. Details are at http://detroit.cbslocal.com/show/sportsfest-2012/

Last call folks.

We’ve got our event tonight at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills. Look forward to seeing everyone there. And the rumor mill has it that there might be a few folks who were happily working away at Compuware until just recently that might have suddenly found themselves in the market looking for a new job.

Well…not that you need one for our events, but the invitation’s extended. There will be plenty of recruiters looking to hire people at our event tonight, so don’t be shy. I know it’s rough, and I know it sucks the life out of you when you get caught short like that…but, seriously, we’ve all been there. Don’t sweat it. C’mon out and let one of us buy you a beer and get your ass back to work as soon as is humanly possible.

So, the details for tonight…

Rochester Mills. Rochester Hills. 5:01pm start time. Walk in, head towards the bar…walk past the bar (I know, that’ll be hard…you can stop and grab something on your way past it if you really need to), and there we’ll be. Nice big and open area, tables, some comfy chairs, all part of the “experimenting with someplace new” process. Really looking forward to it. Rumor has it that we might even have a few pool tables set aside for us.

There’s also a rather enterprising young woman who’s going to be doing a coat check service for us. She’s started her own business doing this, and it’s $3 to check your coat with her. Rochester Mills doesn’t have one, and so we thought this would be something cool to have available. Plus, it’s a good idea to encourage people who are doing something other than just whining about the job market and actually creating their own opportunities.

Oh, and for the record – nope, not getting a kickback from her either. Just sayin’.

Details can be found on our site at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/ or on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/soDfC9

If you missed yesterday’s updates at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3102/updates-02152012/, check ‘em out, because there are plenty of jobs to be had.

See you there!

There’s an awful lot going on these days.

We have our event tomorrow (that’s Thursday, for those of you keeping score at home) night up at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills. A few blog entries went live. Bob utterly failed on Star Wars night at the Pistons game last Friday. I got asked to be a moderator for a panel discussion on using social media to find a job…

…yes, I’ll just let that one marinate for a moment.

Me. Moderator. Panel discussion.

Trust me, Bob and Jeff are both already planning on multiple video cameras being present…and Jeff’s frantically scouring the internet for a high enough voltage shock collar that they can slip on me after a few pre-event drinks that night…

…but I’ll get more into that event, oh, probably Friday in our LinkedIn group and in next week’s updates here on the site. I don’t want to distract too much from our event tomorrow night just yet.

Speaking of which, let’s go ahead and get those details out there, shall we?

Rochester Mills. Rochester Hills. 5:01pm start time. Walk in, head towards the bar…walk past the bar (I know, that’ll be hard…you can stop and grab something on your way past it if you really need to), and there we’ll be. Nice big and open area, tables, some comfy chairs, all part of the “experimenting with someplace new” process. Really looking forward to it. Rumor has it that we might even have a few pool tables set aside for us.

Details can be found on our site at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/ or on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/soDfC9

As always – no cover charges. No sales pitches. No agendas. No…well, no anything, really, other than meeting, drinks and chatting with some of the coolest folks in the IT industry here in metro Detroit that don’t suck - our members.

Okay, well, most of them don’t suck. We just found one that had never seen a single Star Wars film. He’s been locked in a janitor’s closet with a DVD player, all six films, and a bucket in the corner until he can recite at least three “key” lines from each movie.

And speaking of things that don’t suck, late last week we put out a two-parter on How Not To Suck At Interviewing For A Job. Part 1 covers the preparation and “getting ready” process taking you up through the night before your interview and can be found here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3078/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-i/

Part 2 then dives into what you should be doing on the day of your interview, at the interview, and after the interview, and that can be found here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3086/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-ii/

Now, before you have to go worrying about preparing for an interview, you have to find a job you’re interested in, right?

Right.

So before we continue on with this week’s updates, let’s go ahead take a look at some of the jobs that are sitting in our LinkedIn group right now. After that, then we’ll go ahead and continue with some more updates for other groups, other events, and other miscellaneous things we thought you might want to know about.

Great Opportunity for Senior QA’s. Please feel free to pass along!
Job: Senior QA Analyst in Bingham Farms, MI Title: Senior QA Tester Location: Bingham Farms, MI Term: Long-Term Contract (with possibility of going direct) Start Date:

Phew. I think that’s enough for now. As I’m sure you’re aware (and if not, you should be), it’s almost inevitable that more will get posted through the time leading up to our event tomorrow night. And since the questions came up twice this past week:

- No, it doesn’t cost you anything to post jobs in our group

- Yes, we try and keep up with what’s been posted since our last update and make sure they get included in the upcoming updates.

- No, it still doesn’t cost you anything.

- Yes, we can show you how to get your jobs posted. Go here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/1153/how-to-post-jobs-with-detroitnet-org/ and read.

Now, if you’re looking for something to do today while you’re waiting for our event tomorrow night, you might want to check out:

- During the day today, you can check out the MIVirtualCareerFair, sort of a virtual job fair of sorts, from what I understand. In fact, if someone has the time to check it out and let us know how it is, if it’s useful, etc., that would be most appreciated.

- Tonight, the MIGANG event takes place with a focus on Powershell. Good group of folks, .NET focused, and some of them even like beer.

Still reading? That other event that I’ll start talking about on Friday…the one where I’m almost assuredly going to say or do something stupid…that’s during the evening on March 1st. Keep on eye here on the site and in the LinkedIn group, because there are other events and things taking place this weekend and in the near future that I’m saving for now so that I have more than the usual “Hey…that event last night was pretty cool, huh?” to say on Friday.

That’s the news, and I…am…outta here!

See you tomorrow night - http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/ – at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills. Or not. If, you know, you’re That Guy.

Regards,

Congratulations, you’ve made it past the first hurdle.

You’ve gotten past the gatekeepers, resume screeners, candidate tracking systems, and have gotten a call or email that someone would actually like to talk to you about hiring you for a job that they have open.

Now, let’s not kid ourselves – even though you’ve made it past the whirling blades of death at the entrance to the secret cave containing the buried treasure…there are still a lot of obstacles to be handled before you can start deciding what you need to pack in your cardbox box for your first day at the office to make it feel like “you”.

Let’s at least make it through the interview first.

Yesterday we got you through the prep work before the interview, so now let’s tackle the interview itself…

Interview day. Keep calm, cowboy (or cowgirl, I guess). No need to start having Niagara Falls running from your armpits…we’ll get you through this.

Check everything. Twice. Copies of your resume printed out and ready to go? Good. Put them in a folder and don’t spill coffee on them. Find your car keys and put them with your resumes. Double check your clothing selection and make sure you’re still happy with it. Using a printed map? Put it with the resumes. Get yourself organized and ready to go long before you have to be walking out the door or on the phone. Do you have the phone number of the recruiter in your phone? The person you’ll be interviewing with? Got everyone’s name written down so that you’ll have them handy? Good.

Any breaking news? Do a quick “latest” Google search for the company. Maybe the CEO just got indicted that morning. Maybe they just picked up a major client. Maybe someone that works for them is getting nailed to the wall over a social media problem. Walk in armed, folks. Anything topical and relevant shows that you’re on top of things and interested.

Get ready. Get dressed, grab your stuff, take one last look for everything…and if you’re heading into your job for the day, make sure everything you need is in the car before you pull out of the driveway.

Okay, so now you’re there (10 to 15 minutes early, right? Right.), and it’s time to talk about the interview itself.

Be polite and nice to everyone. The receptionist might be the hiring manager’s girlfriend. The janitor might be someone’s brother in law. Don’t kill your chances before you even make it into the room by being anything other than stunningly well mannered and professional.

Get a grip. Please don’t have a handshake that makes people think they’re grabbing onto a jellyfish. Don’t go trying to out-macho someone with a crushing grip, but have a nice, firm handshake for anyone and everyone that you meet and encounter along the way. I wish I didn’t have to say this, but I’ve been told that it’s happened – you are not “a hugger”. You’re not. I don’t care if you are with all of your friends and random strangers in a bar…for the purposes of today, you’re not.

Relax. They need to hire someone. They saw something on your resume that made them think you could do the job. So…relax. Don’t get anxious and start randomly babbling. Take your time. Listen. Absorb.

Show off a bit. You went through all of that trouble to make sure you’re prepared, so you might as well do something that shows it, right? Ask if everyone has copies of your resume. As you’re walking back to wherever it is you’ll be chatting, take note of something…an award, something on the walls like the founder’s picture…and ask a question that shows you did a little research. “I understand she started the company 12 years ago…have you been here that whole time?”, or “I see the Great Places to Work plaques…five years in a row? People must really like it here.” or something along those lines.

Be Aware. As you’re taking your time, listening and absorbing…be attentive to the flow of the conversation and pattern of questions as they start. Make a lot of eye contact. Speak with confidence, but don’t become an arrogant jerk that nobody’s going to want to hire. Don’t be a conversation hog, and don’t interrupt…but make note (take notes if you need to) of what’s being discussed, and start thinking through how you can relate it back to your past experiences, your roles and responsibilities, and your history. Ask for business cards from anyone in the room during your interview. If they don’t have one, make sure you get their name right, and write it down for reference.

Honesty is the best policy. It’s okay to not know the answer to something. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t have a skill they’re asking about…it happens. This isn’t the time to start lying. Don’t start yammering and stuttering like a fool though – think on your feet and spin it back to your background and experiences. Explain a situation where you’ve picked up a new, similar skill quickly and put it to good use. Describe how you’ve handled similar challenges in the past and conquered them. The last thing you want to do is get exposed as being dishonest during the interview…and if you claim to know something you don’t…well, you never know when someone’s got a test waiting for you just outside the room, or a tech lead that’s going to want to grill you, or someone with a lot of experience in that methodology that’s joining the interview in 10 minutes.

Sometimes, it’s not what you answer, but how you answer. Nobody in HR really cares what kind of tree you’d be if you were a tree. Nobody expects you to actually know off the top of your head how many quarters are in the stack it would take to reach the top of the Empire State Building. It’s not really about the title of the last book you read. What it is about is your personality type. How do you react to adversity? How do you handle…”odd”…circumstances. Can you think on your feet? Are you capable of problem solving? Will your personality mesh with the rest of the team?

Ask your questions. Again, you took the time to do some homework and create some questions, so make sure you ask them. Show interest, and again, as these questions are being discussed and answered, be thinking of how you can relate the flow back to your work life and history. You’re not only showing interest here, but you’re making sure that you’re defining yourself as the perfect candidate for this job.

Closing time. Odds are good that they’re not sitting there with an offer letter on the other side of the table. There’s a process that’s going to be followed here, and if I were you, I’d want to know what that process is going to look like. Where are they in the cycle? Are there other interviewees coming in? When is the position req closing? If you’re interested, say so. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with telling them that you want the job, and so you want to understand what, if any, obstacles remain in your way. Again – show interest.

Follow up and follow through. If you’re dealing with a recruiter, as soon as you get back to your car you should be on the phone with them. If not, when you get home, fire off an email to the person you’ve been dealing with about the job, as well as the person(s) with whom you just interviewed. Thank them for their time, and again, express an interest in the position…assuming, of course, that you are. If something came up during the interview that you’re supposed to get back with them on (an updated resume, a link to something you’ve done in the past, etc.) do so. Don’t make them have to ask you again…because they probably won’t.

Be patient. This is probably the hardest thing to do…especially if you really, really want the job…but it’s the most important part. Don’t turn into a stalker. No emails every day to the hiring manager when they told you that a decision wouldn’t be made for three weeks. No phone calls to the recruiter every hour on the hour asking if they’ve heard anything yet. You wait. If you didn’t get a reply to your first email, and a few days (like “three or more”) has gone by, it is acceptable to go ahead and forward your note along with a (probably untrue, but I’m a big fan of “you can’t prove it”) statement like “Hey, I noticed I had a couple of email issues the other day, and so I wanted to make sure this reached you so that you didn’t think I wasn’t interested and following up…” or something similar. I know it may be hard to believe, but everyone involved in the process here wants to get this closed out as soon as possible. You want the job, they want someone to fill the need they have, the HR person wants to stop getting nagged about why their jobs aren’t getting filled, the recruiter wants to make quota and get paid…everyone’s committed, I assure you.

And that, friends and readers…is how not to suck at interviewing for a job.

Let’s at least make it through the interview first…

Now, to start…it doesn’t matter if you’re going to be hopping on a phone call, a skype chat, or heading out of your house for an in-person interview. There are some basic preparation steps that you need to be making for any or all of these, so let’s start with what you should be doing no later than the night before the interview:

Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the company that you’ll be interviewing with, as well as the specific position that you’ll be interviewing for. Do a little looking around about the industry, especially if it’s one that you haven’t been a part of in the past.

Create questions. Come up with at least three to five questions that you’ll want to ask, about the job you’re interviewing for, about the company in general, and about their industry as a whole. What specific challenge is the company facing right now that has them looking to hire someone? What would be the first thing you would be expected to dive into when you start? (and yes, it’s a “tone and tense” thing, but be positive and project confidence – it’s not “if” you start, or “if” you get the job, but “when“.) What are the projected growth areas for the company, and how will your role be a part of that evolution? Let everyone else that comes in focus on “when’s the start date?” and “how much are you gonna pay me?”…show you’re focused on the future, and planning on being there a while.

Make a dry run of the route. Nothing sucks worse than finding out on your way to the interview that the road you planned to take has been closed for two weeks. Or that Mapquest and Google navigation don’t yet know that the overpass bridge has been taken out of commission for repair. So if you’re doing an in-person interview, hop in the car and drive there…preferably during the same time frame that you would be driving there for the interview itself if at all possible. Take note of traffic patterns, overly long lights…you’re trying to make a good first impression, and having to frantically try and call someone to tell them you’ll be 15 minutes late isn’t the way to do that. Whatever your drive time is during your dry-run, be safe and add 50% to it – better to be early and have to kill a little time playing Angry Birds in the parking lot than to hit a little traffic and have to make that frantic phone call.

If it’s a phone or skype interview, the same rules apply…just obviously in a slightly different manner. Make sure your phone works. Make sure your computer works. Make sure your internet connection is solid. Make sure any pending updates are either told to wait, or are completed and you’ve rebooted a few times to confirm a lack of problems or conflicts. Most importantly for phone and skype interviews – plan your space. Are you at home…with the kids…who are usually screaming and running around the house like lunatics during the time of the interview? Better make sure you can lock yourself in the basement or a bedroom away from the chaos. For Skype in particular when we’re talking about video, make sure you have an area free of clutter, without anything repulsive or embarrassing behind you that will be in-frame when you’re on cam. No joke, had a recruiter tell me a great story about someone who completely blew a client interview in the first ten seconds when the client asked if he wouldn’t mind moving a bit so that his stash of DVD porn wasn’t in camera. Precious.

Handle your paperwork. Find out how many people you’ll be interviewing with, and print out that many copies of your resume…plus two extras. One for yourself, and one for whatever last minute addition they throw in the mix. Yes, they’ve already likely seen your resume…but may not have brought it with them. Or maybe they haven’t. Or…and this has happened to me in the past…maybe an overzealous recruiter “tweaked” your resume without relaying this back to you, and so you’d better have your own version handy and available to make sure everyone’s on the same page. Remember – nobody knows you better than you do, and you…you alone…are responsible for what appears on your resume. Be safe – if you’re dealing with a recruiter, ask if they’ve reformatted or edited your resume at all, and request a copy of the version that was given to the client. If you’re doing the interview via phone/skype, have a “solid” version readily available for emailing out if necessary.

The clothes make the man…or woman. Figure out what you want to wear, and then make sure it’s clean and ready to go. It doesn’t matter if you’ve heard the environment is completely casual – you’re dressing professionally. So plan accordingly. Throw it through the washer and dryer if needed. Bring it to the dry cleaners for a pressing. Beat the hell out of it with a lint roller to get all the damned cat hair off…don’t wait until you get out of the shower tomorrow and have to leave in 20 minutes to find out there’s a giant stain on the jacket you plan to wear. Naturally, if you’re already employed and going on an interview, you’re going to have to resort to a little discretion here. If you walk around the office in khakis and polos all day, showing up the next morning with a suit and tie on is probably going to raise a few eyebrows and get people asking questions that you don’t want to be answering. Nobody is unrealistic, and if you throw a sportcoat in the car that you can slip on when you get to the interview without anyone at the office catching on, you should be okay for most positions. If it’s a C or D level job…well, yeah, you might have to figure out how to slip a tie into the equation. Or perhaps take a half day off to have time to fully change clothes into your interview attire. If you have any questions…ask. Ask the recruiter, or the person with whom you’ve been communicating about the job. Explain your situation, and ask about dress.

Get charged. Plug in the laptop. Get your phone charging on the nightstand. Don’t let a dead battery be a problem in the morning. While you’re at it, check the gas tank in your car, and go make sure you’re set before tomorrow morning hits. Don’t add any unnecessary/unwanted/unneeded stops into the mix for tomorrow. We want to remain calm, cool and collected…and not smelling like ethanol and exhaust fumes when we arrive.

I hope it goes without saying that you should want to get a good night’s sleep. No “good luck on the interview!” benders with friends that last until 3am. No all night gaming sessions. No “just one more episode of Battlestar Galactica that I’m catching up on…”…none of that.

And that, friends and readers…is part one of how not to suck at interviewing for a job. Tomorrow, we’ll tackle part two, which will cover the day of the interview and the follow up/follow through process.

While you’re waiting on that, feel free to check out our other How Not To Suck entries at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/category/hints/ or the rest of our blog over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/blog/

Is it just me, or does it seem like a really long time since our January event at the BlackFinn happened? Maybe it’s just that whole “the older you get, the faster time goes by” thing that my grandparents always warned me about…

Anyway, we’ve got our next event next Thursday night, the 16th, out at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills.

We’ve had a few blog entries go live as well, including a couple Don’t Be That Guy entries as well as a new How Not To Suck about LinkedIn.

And of course, the usual fun and excitement taking place in our LinkedIn group, including chats, jobs, Jeff and I plotting to get Bob dressed up like Barf from Spaceballs this Friday night…

Ha! I knew that last part would get you to keep reading. Suckers.

As always though – first thing’s first. Our next event.

Thursday, February 16th. 5:01pm. Rochester Mills Brewery in Rochester Hills. Details can be found here on our site at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/ or over on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/soDfC9

New venue, new cit…wait, no, not a new city. We did Penny Black before. Well, still a new venue.

As always, looking forward to seeing you there!

DO IT, BOB, DO IT!

And yes, this Friday night, Jeff and I will be attempting to get Bob drunk enough to dress up like Barf from Spaceballs as we head to Star Wars night at the Palace. It’s a Pistons game…and you know how well they’re doing this year…so, yeah, “good seats still available!” if you’re interested. No, this isn’t a “detroitnet.org” thing…this is a “Dave heard it was Star Wars night, immediately called Bob and Jeff to announce that there was no option but to go” thing. I guess there will be people wandering around in costumes, a halftime show put on by Lucasfilm, limited edition posters…so, yeah, it’s a geek thing. So, we’re aiming to get Bob dressed up as Barf…or perhaps the “Chris from Family Guy” version of a stormtrooper. It pretty much depends wholly on how early we can get him to start drinking, I’m sure.

Wait…actually, it’s Bob, Dave and Jeff getting together for beers and geeking…so I guess it kind of is a detroitnet.org thing after all, since that’s pretty much how we started.

Speaking of “detroitnet.org thing”…our thing has always been our blog, and we’ve got some new entries for you to read.

In case you missed last week’s update, you can still catch Don’t Be That Guy – The Angry Birds Edition out at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3017/dont-be-that-guy-the-angry-birds-edition/, and You Are Not A Social Media Expert over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3035/you-are-not-a-social-media-expert/

Both of those have fairly self-explanatory titles.

Then this past week we’ve put out what will likely be “part one” of How Not To Suck At LinkedIn at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2684/how-not-to-suck-at-linkedin/, and then our latest Don’t Be That Guy entry – The Fallen Angel is live out at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3061/the-fallen-angel/

So now let’s talk about LinkedIn. As always, our group can be found at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Detroitnetorg-Detroit-Networking-Events-IT-91763

Right now, we’ve got discussions going on about the aforementioned basketball game, the obligatory discussion about Sunday’s game and commercials, ways to do better on interviews, and all sorts of other fun topics. So, if you’re not already doing so, hop on in there and get to chatting.

And jobs. Oh, are there jobs to be had. If you’re a .Net or Java developer who’s out of work right now…there has to be something wrong. Seriously. Not only those, but we’ve got people hunting PhP developers like there’s a key to the city waiting for them when they find one, along with tech support (hey, you people that are always complaining that only mid to senior career level positions wind up in our group – yes, YOU – you reading?), systems administrators, basically everything all the way up to and including director level positions folks. If you’re on the hunt, or even casually looking…you may deserve to get a papercut to your eyeball if you’re not looking in our LinkedIn group.

“If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.” – Martin Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank.

“Trading in memories for fortune and fame; Just a step away from the edge of a fall” – Poison, Fallen Angel

“I am not a role model” – Charles Barkley

We’re very careful about how we describe ourselves, how we allow ourselves to be portrayed, and most importantly…how we view ourselves.

We run a group that’s helped over three hundred people find jobs…but we’re not “an organization dedicated to helping people find jobs”.

We’ve done a few events that have a charitable flavor to them…but we don’t hit you up every fifteen minutes looking for donations to the cause of the day.

We don’t put ourselves out there as saving the world, or being such great, magnanimous people that you should just bask in the glory of our goodness.

Not only because we don’t think of ourselves that way, but also because none of us wants to become The Fallen Angel…

Say what you will about Charles Barkley…but the man is honest.

His “I am not a role model” commercial still sticks out in my head as being so incredibly candid, honest, and forthcoming about the reality of his life and the situations he finds himself in…that, well, ironically enough he kind of turned into something of a role model.

I can’t tell you how many times the conversation has taken place about when it’s going to come out that Tim Tebow has fathered illegitimate children all across the country, has a custom equipped S&M dungeon behind a hidden door in his basement, and likes to wear thigh-highs and be called “Janice”.

Sure, maybe it’s jaded cynicism talking there…but can you blame us?

Nothing sadder than a fallen angel...

How many “angels” have fallen over the years? How many scandals have clipped the wings of political aspirations, business empires, and personal lives? Drugs. Other women. Other men. Secret lives. The border patrol agent…who hires illegal immigrants to cut his lawn. The evangelist found in a seedy hotel room with prostitutes and cocaine. The politician running on a platform of “family values” with multiple divorces, affairs and children hidden out of the public eye.

But none of those situations capture our attention and fascinate us the way that they do if those individuals don’t put themselves in the positions that they do. There’s no “scandal” at all…if you are who you portray yourself to be.

And that is why we don’t pretend to be something that we’re not. We’re three guys who like beer and like getting together from time to time with people in the industry so that we can expand our own networks. That a string of good things has come as a result of that is nice…but at the end of the day…still: three guys, beer, chatting.

We don’t go on tv talking about how awesome we are. The charitable organizations that we work with are kept (for the most part) at arm’s length and out of the chain of discussion. None of us are running for public office…if for no other reason than if any one of us did, the other two would have way too much fun with it. We’re not gunning for a seat on the city council. You don’t get a constant stream of updates about such and such charitable event at this or that venue and pin a friggin’ ribbon on us and give us a plaque. We don’t want our names on the wall of anyplace other than the local steak joint for scarfing down that ridiculous porterhouse.

Because we neither want nor need people gunning for us.

We've got nothing else going on these days.

And that’s what happens when you put yourself out there like that. You get some jackwad with a cell phone catching video of you staggering off to the bathroom after one too many beers. You get people who think you’re stealing their thunder and limelight tipping off the cops about some recreational pharmaceuticals that you might have in your possession.

And then…it happens.

You become The Fallen Angel.

And now those kids that looked up to you have to wonder why the person that was held up to be the paragon of virtue to them was arrested and can’t come around any more. The charities that you work with have to distance themselves from you and as a result lose the benefit of the funds you used to help raise for them. The groups you used to help now have to find someone else to do what you did for them. Your boss has to deal with clients asking questions, and your co-workers have to pick up your workload. Your friends have to start wondering about your past actions…what they meant, what they were really all about…and if the phone calls and text messages they’ve exchanged with you are going to result in subpoenas and become part of some full blown Kwame-esque debacle.

So…we keep ourselves in check. Or, more importantly, we each keep each other in check.

Sure, some might think it’s the “weak” way out to not put yourself out there…but we prefer to think of it as intelligently knowing ourselves better than anyone else.

Because we are not role models.

And we damned sure don’t want to be The Fallen Angel.

…and that’s all for this time. Check out our other Don’t Be That Guy entries, and we look forward to seeing you at future events. As long as you aren’t mic’d and carrying a hidden camera.

You can find the site where the Fallen Angel image was found here: http://missrosen.wordpress.com/2011/11/26/fallen-angel/ Some really nice images there, too.

Continuing our (relatively new) tradition of helping you not suck, we now move into How Not To Suck At LinkedIn.

We’ll take a look at some of the key areas that cause people to suck at LinkedIn – the profile, groups, statuses, various applications…and hopefully help to keep you from being one of those people who can’t figure out why they don’t have any quality professional connections.

Ready?

Let’s get started…

Test 1: Does Your LinkedIn Profile Suck?

Click Me

Your profile is the heart and soul of what you do on LinkedIn. If your profile sucks, you’re not going to do well.

So let’s start with the basics, and make sure that you have them covered properly. Please start by clicking on our handy-dandy flowchart to the right to read it before continuing.

IS YOUR NAME IN ALL CAPS? If so, you probably already suck, and we’re just getting started. You don’t need to scream your name at people. Just a simple First Name and Last Name is all you need. It’s not that hard.

Does your tagline (your “Professional Headline”) readily address who and what you are in a clear and concise manner? And for the love of all that’s good and holy in the world, unless you wear all black, slink around at night and kill off 13th century Japanese warlords…you are not a “ninja”. You’re not. Stop it. Similarly, if the words you are using to describe yourself do not appear in a standard dictionary…you suck. You are not “an eHyperMedia Coachultant Experientialist”. There’s no such thing. You are not being innovative, creative, or witty. You are asking for a Three Stooges-style poke in the eye. At a minimum.

Do you have a photo? More importantly, do you have a photo that your co-workers, boss, and prospective employers should see? Leave the “licking the last drops as they fall out of the tequila bottle” picture for Facebook, party boy. And while we’re at it, you’re looking for professional connections, not someone to help you complete your MRS degree, so let’s keep the bikini photos on the shelf, missy. You don’t need a “professional headshot” or anything like that – you’re expanding your professional network, not going to a casting call for CSI: Detroit. Just a simple photo…of you. Not of “you and your significant other”, not of “you and your dog”, not of “you and your 37 cats”, not of “you and your offspring”…just you. Again, professional networking, not catching up with the family photo albums over coffee. Plus, believe it or not, odds are good that there’s more than one person on LinkedIn with your same name, so a photo makes you quickly and easily recognizable to people.

Have you read Don’t Be That Guy – Bad Resume Guy? Because as you start to fill out the professional history and employment sections of your profile, you’re basically re-creating your resume. And wouldn’t it be nice if you’d already taken the time to build your resume the right way, so that all you have to do is copy and paste here? Of course it would. So take the time to get your resume right…and you’ll also be making sure that your LinkedIn profile will be solid at the same time.

Can anyone find you? Your home email address should always be your main email address with LinkedIn. Yes, you should also list your work email address as an alternate, because some people may try to find you that way…but your personal email is always your primary. Why? Because even though it would never happen to you, what happens if you suddenly find yourself unable to access that email address any more? What happens if you get locked out of it? Think ahead and be smart. Your professional network is your professional network – not your company’s, not your buddy’s, not anyone else’s…yours. Own it…and make sure you always own it. You don’t have to list a phone number if you don’t want to, but you can always choose to hide it if you do.

Are any achievements, websites, or other “extra” information that you provide professionally oriented? Nobody cares that you were the Tappa Kegga Bru Beer Pong Champion 2006-2010, Skippy. Okay, correct that – nobody that you should be looking to engage with on LinkedIn cares. Similarly, you can leave off the “Winner, Senor Frog’s Wet T-Shirt Contest, Spring Break 2009″ accomplishments. You also don’t want to link to your Facebook profile (again, “professional networking”…not “friends”), your church group’s website, or anything else along those lines. Remember, this is basically your online resume – leave anything off of it that shouldn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if you’re married or single. It doesn’t matter that you have eight kids. It doesn’t matter that you got 2000 karma points on the Reddit forums in one post because you embarrassed yourself spectacularly. None of that matters in a professional world…and why would you make it easy for someone to find something out through your profile that they’re not legally allowed to ask you during the interview and hiring process?

Test 2: Do Your Connections Suck?

Click me

Have your read LinkedIn is Not a Video Game? If not, go do so now by clicking here. That’s a key foundation to all of this…and to our group…and to networking in general.

There’s a very simple premise here…which is why we can detail the entire thing in that simple flowchart to the right you can click on to view. You only add people as connections that you know well. There are no points for a high score, there is absolutely zero real, tangible benefit to being one of those “open networkers” you hear/see/read about…none. I used to give recruiters a pass on this front, but I’ve since changed my mind about it…and for a good reason.

Let’s say you need to hire a .Net developer. And let’s say that you’ve accepted or created connections with 50 .Net developers completely randomly. You don’t know them, they don’t know you, and you know nothing about them. How is that any different from when a client comes to you and says “I need a .Net developer” and you do a random search? Just because they’re a random connection of yours doesn’t mean anything. They’re no more likely to trust you than if you were to just randomly email them now with your need. You still don’t know if they’re any good. In fact, the only thing you really know about them is that they didn’t know enough to reject a LinkedIn request from someone they didn’t actually know.

And even though you read LinkedIn Is Not A Video Game (because you did, right?) and so you know how we feel about the whole “open networker” or “LION” thing, it bears repeating: don’t do it. We just explained to you why, and there is no solid, rational reason for anyone to be doing this. People have tried to convince us, and they’ve tried to rationalize it. They keep failing.

Test 3: Do Your Status Updates and Linked Applications Suck?

Click me

Are you Twittering yourself into a “remove connection” click?

Does your professional network truly need to know how you feel about current political figures?

Do you genuinely think I care what kind of soup you had at lunch with random people that I don’t know or care about either?

Have you violated all of the other Commandments of Networking, and so you’ve decided to just go ahead and annoy the hell out of everyone on every social media platform simultaneously with the same, constant stream of nonsense?

Even if you’re trying to impress a new boss, updating your LinkedIn status every 45 minutes with whatever meeting you’re going to, with whomever you’re going to be meeting with…is over the top. Rampant, over the top insecurity and attention whoring isn’t an attractive feature in a professional connection. So, again: stop it.

In a similar vein, you don’t need to go linking your Pinterest pins to your Twitter tweets to your LinkedIn updates to your Facebook status to your Google+ circles to your blog entries about your life with thirty seven cats. If that didn’t come through loud and clear when you clicked on and read that latest flowchart up there…now we’re spelling it out for you.

Keep your personal and professional life separate. Even if that means setting up multiple email addresses, separate Facebook accounts, different Twitter streams…do it. You’ll thank me at some point in time, I assure you.

And even if you don’t feel that thankful…everyone else will.

I think that’s a good enough starting point for now. If you can pass those three basic tests, you’re at least well on your way to sucking less than a lot of people on LinkedIn…and that’s all we can hope for. We don’t go for “perfect”…we just want things to suck less.

We’ll stop here, and continue on with part two down the road. In the meantime, check out our other How Not To Suck entries at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/category/hints/ or the rest of our blog over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/blog/

Well that was probably the weirdest January since I’ve been out here in Michigan.

I’m still convinced we’re being lulled into a false sense of security though…I’m pretty sure we’re still going to be getting whomped with snow into May because of this mild weather…

Anyway, on to our usual updates.

We had a couple Don’t Be That Guy entries that went live, we’re still having conversations and getting some traction on our ideas for an IT conference, we’re two weeks away from our next metro Detroit casual networking event, and of course we have jobs being posted and chats taking place in our LinkedIn group…

First stop, as always, is our next event. Thursday, February 16th. Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills. 5:01pm start time. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. As always, details on all of our events can be found on our Events page out at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/, or over on LinkedIn.com at http://linkd.in/soDfC9

Don’t Be That Guy – The Angry Birds Edition went live at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3017/dont-be-that-guy-the-angry-birds-edition/

We finally figured out how to explain why You Are Not A Social Media Expert, and so we did so at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/3035/you-are-not-a-social-media-expert/

You can still chime in and give us input (and we’ve had a ton of great stuff come in thus far, thank you!) about an IT conference in Detroit here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2969/poll-it-conference-in-detroit/

Which brings us back to our LinkedIn group and jobs, where there’s everything from freelance gigs to sys admin gigs to people hunting for developers through directors. Go.

We’ve always said that we’re not “social media experts”.

We’re not. We try things, we experiment, and we have some moderate amount of success with certain things…but we’re not experts.

And there’s always been something that bothered me about that term – “social media expert” – but I could never really nail down what it was or why it nagged at me so much.

Now I can.

So now I can finally express why we’re not social media experts.

And I can also tell you why you’re not one, either…

At every casual networking event that we hold, the following two conversations each take place at least once:

The first:

Me: “What can I help you find?”

Random Recruiter: “I need geeks.”

Me: “Great. That’s most of this room. What can I help you find?”

Random Recruiter: “Developers.”

Me: “Great, quite a few of those floating around tonight, but you’re going to need to be more specific. What kind of developers do you need? And if you say ‘really good ones’, I will laugh at you.”

Random Recruiter: “Oh…ha ha…okay, I need a solid .Net developer that can write applications…”

Perfect. Now we’re talking the same language.

The second:

Me: “What do you do?”

Other Person: “I.T. stuff”

Me: “Great. So does everyone in this room. What do you do?”

Other Person: “I’m a very experienced developer.”

Me: “Great. Going to have to be a little bit more specific with this crowd. What do you do?”

Other Person: “I write custom .Net apps for…”

There we go. Now we’re on the same page and can get started.

And now I can play traffic cop appropriately, and make a connection between two people that are looking for each other.

Insert “eHarmony/Match.com” joke [here].

So you see, walking into a room and announcing that you’re an expert in a field that has become so widespread and generic doesn’t really do anyone much good. It’s true for “developer” as much as it’s true for “social media” and other realms, too.

My in-laws are convinced I just “build websites”…because that’s all that they really have the capacity to understand. They don’t “get” the differentiations between server, network and application architecture. That’s just not in their zone…which is fine. I don’t understand the intricate workings of my father in law’s 1948 Harley Davidson that has something called a “shovelhead” in it, either…beyond the fact that it sounds like a horse galloping when it’s idling, which is cool. I helped him figure out the math to extend the front end on another Harley, and even how to mount up a snowmobile engine and transmission into the sucker. And he did all the work himself – welding, frame bending…hell, he’s got yet another bike that he basically build from scratch.

But if you ask him, he’s not “a motorcycle expert”. He knows nothing of Hondas, or Buell’s, or any of the other random makes and models out there.

He’s not even “a Harley Davidson expert”…although I would challenge nearly anyone to prove they know more than he does about them.

So then I look at something like social media…and I realize there’s really no difference from “developer” or even “motorcycle guy”.

Social media has become so wide, so vast, so diffuse and spread out to mean so many different things…how can anyone possibly lay claim to being an “expert” at it all?

Great, you built a Facebook fan page that got 8,000 people to like it…but what about your Twitter handle that only has 14 followers and your Youtube videos that have gotten, at most, one view each?

Awesome, you built up a Twitter account that has 40,000 followers…but your Facebook page has 200 “likes”, and nobody can even find you on LinkedIn because you’re not there.

The 40 people you engage with on Path daily think you’re the greatest thing going…but those are also only the same 40 people that read your Facebook updates. And your blog. And your Tumblr account. And on Google+. And…

I think that’s what I’m calling for here…an end to the use of the term “social media expert”. Or “wizard”. Or “ninja”. Or any of the other useless titles people are slapping on themselves these days…

…because they’re just not accurate.

You may be the T-Rex of Twitter, the Foreman of Facebook, the Brando of Blogging…

…but you are not a “social media expert”.

Now you’ll have to excuse me…these websites aren’t going to just build themselves, you know.

I have an extremely addictive personality.

I know this comes as no surprise to any of you that have spent any time around me at all. I’m simply physically, or mentally, incapable of doing something half-assed.

Everything becomes an obsession…a compulsion…especially games…but I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, right? Right.

So it shouldn’t come as too much of a shocker that I’m going to use Angry Birds for my next set of analogies when it comes to That Guy and networking events…

In case you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years and have absolutely no idea what the hell I’m talking about when I mention Angry Birds…

…well, I guess you can pretty much stop reading right now, because none of this is going to make any sense to you whatsoever, huh? Or, I suppose you could go read about it at that resource trusted by schoolchildren everywhere for plagiarism purposes, Wikipedia, out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angry_Birds (it’s not another activist “blackout” day or anything is it? ..it is? Okay, well, here’s the Rovio company website too, just to be safe: http://www.rovio.com/en/our-work/games/view/1/angry-birds) so that you can follow along, at least. Oh, and obviously they own all of the images, etc., that are related to their games. I’m just using them for the sake of comparison here to make it easier.

Okay, good?

And just because I mentioned Angry Birds and triggered your own addiction…stop playing for like three minutes so you can read this.

The Red Bird – aka Who?

Our first example is the very first bird you meet when you fire up Angry Birds. The red bird.

There is absolutely nothing remarkable about the red bird.

It doesn’t do anything except make a squawking noise. It just kind of lumbers along and does it’s thing…but it’s completely unmemorable.

You forget about the red bird as soon as you get access to other, more interesting birds as you move through the game.

So don’t be the red bird. You want to be remembered. It’s cool and everything that you just sort of plod along doing your job…the “old faithful” of the Angry Birds world…but if you’re forgotten, then showing up was for naught.

The Yellow Bird – aka The Mad Dasher

The next bird we meet is the yellow bird…the mad dasher of the networking world.

Much like the yellow bird, the Mad Dasher doesn’t have time to hang around and chat…they’re in a hurry, dammit.

They’ve got to get where they’re going, and they’ve got to get there faster than anyone else. Blasting through obstacles…pushing anything in his path out of the way.

While the Mad Dasher might think they’re being very effective…the only thing they’re really being effective at is creating a lasting impression of being a rude jackass. Slow down, take your time, and make sure you make the impression you want to make, not the one you think you’re making.

The Blue Splitter – aka Captain Distraction

This bird has the unique ability of splitting itself into three smaller birds.

While that’s an awesome and effective tactic to use in the game…being able to take out three times as many targets in three separate areas…trust me, you can’t do this effectively.

You cannot divide your attention among three different conversations.

You cannot possibly focus on three things taking place at the same time and give all three of them the attention that they deserve.

So keep yourself together and don’t tap on the screen to trigger the division – stay in one piece, keep yourself together, and focus on the moment. Give your full attention to the person in front of you, and then move on as the situation winds down and make your next attack…uhh, attempt at conversation with someone new.

The Black Bird – aka Exploding Chaos

Although probably self explanatory…I’m going to go ahead and explain this one anyway.

Explosions, while fun to watch on Mythbusters, are nowhere nearly as cool in person.

In a similar vein, while we all secretly enjoy a good “Real Housewives of Wherever”-style meltdown…from the comfort of our couches…nobody wants to see that in real life.

So it doesn’t matter if you run into the boss that made your life a living hell before unjustly firing you, your ex that banged 80% of your friends (and only missed the other 20% because they live out of town), a former co-worker that stole all of your ideas to make themselves look better to your detriment…say it with me: it doesn’t matter.

Because if you’re the one that triggers the scene, then that’s all that people are going to remember 99% of the time. They don’t know (or care, for the most part) about the background and history there. All they’ll know, and see, is you losing your crap in public…and unless you’re at a networking event for people looking to be on the next Jersey Shore…bad move.

The White Bird – aka The Drive-By

This particular little gem loves to cause problems…and then not hang around for the aftermath.

Nope, just whips by, drops a bomb, and then blasts off at warp speed.

“Hey…did you hear [company] is about to layoff like 400 people”…and gone.

“That guy’s an ass, stay away from him”…and gone.

Don’t do that. If you’ve got something to say, say it…and then hang around to explain yourself. Otherwise, odds are good that anything you just said wasn’t heard properly, or at least isn’t going to be given very much weight.

The Big Red Bird – aka The Bulldozer

While yes, it can be hard to meet people…the last thing you want to be is rude.

There’s hardly anything worse at a networking event then when you’re right in the middle of a great conversation with someone…and some random person shoves their way in between you and starts yammering about something completely different.

It might be important…it might not be. Either way, it doesn’t matter – now you’re That Guy.

Take your time and be patient. Pace yourself. Just hang back on the fringes, or even casually make your way into the circle that you want to chat with…and then wait.

Pay attention to visual cues – a head nod that acknowledges your presence, or the intentness of the conversation taking place – and know when to break in with an “Excuse me, have you got a moment” or something that’s on-point and relevant to the conversation already going on. That will earn you far more positive attention than interjecting between people with “I’M HERE AND I NEED A JOB!!!“, I assure you.

The Orange Bird – aka The Puffer

This one we’ve actually somewhat covered before.

The orange bird is the Angry Birds version of The Pufferfish.

Looks perfectly normal, cute, minding it’s own business and just plodding along…

…and then POOF!

All puffed up and wreaking havoc.

Keep your emotions…and ego…in check. Nobody likes a puffer.

…and there you have it. Don’t Be That Guy – The Angry Birds Edition.

…and that’s all for this time. Check out our other Don’t Be That Guy entries, and we look forward to seeing you at future events.

Last night was simply fantastic on a number of different levels.

Lots of new faces. Lots of familiar faces. Thank you all for coming out.

Just lots of faces. Wow did we get packed last night. One “Dark Side” moment, but we’ll talk about that in a minute.

How…convenient…that a brewery debuting a new beer and breaking into the SE Michigan market was right there, too.

Loved that. Definitely going to hook up with those folks for a future event.

But let’s talk about everything else for a moment…

First off, the Dark Side moment…because let’s just go ahead and get that out of the way.

In case you missed the memo, a while back we published Don’t Be That Guy: Creepy Guy over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/93/creepy-guy/

Seriously...no.

I’m only gonna say this once: friggin’ read it. Learn it. Live it. Love it. We do not tolerate Creepy Guy. At all.

Ever.

Under any circumstances.

Because I had to explain this last night, I will go ahead and explain the rules of dealing with Creepy Guy in an open manner:

You are free to deal with Creepy Guy in any manner you see fit. If you want to slap Creepy Guy upside the head, do so. If you want to have some bizarre localized epileptic seizure and knee Creepy Guy in the junk, then we’ll all vouch for you and cover for you. If you want to pull Bob, Jeff or me aside and say “Creepy Guy - right there“, then we are more than happy to handle the situation for you.

You are empowered to deal with the situation any way that you see fit. This group has always been a safe harbor on many fronts – I’m a geek, and geeks (by and large) are not social creatures…and so this is a “safe” place for us to be social with each other. This group is supposed to be that for all that show up. That’s why it’s free and safe from sales pitches, agendas, and all the other nonsense that we ban from our group.

And we do ban people from our group, too. So let’s not let this happen again. This is your official “anonymous” call out, given that we’ve had a lot of new folks out there that may not know how we roll here.

There. Done with that topic. Let’s move on to brighter items.

Wheeee!

Packed. Packed, packed, packed.

And yes, that’s a banner over there in the corner. Look at us, getting all organized and stuff.

Crazy talk.

Tons of new faces, lots of new companies, plenty of new recruiters…seriously, you would’ve almost thought it was a Pink Slip Party with how many recruiters we had walking around last night.

Which reminds me, as promised, if you’re looking, and you are a mobile developer, have skills with Oracle, or happen to be a .Net dev…drop me a note. There’s a swarm of companies looking to hire you.

Had a really good conversation with someone under the mistaken impression that we’re social media experts. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – we’re not. Everything we’ve done is completely trial and error (sometimes way more “error”…), but yes, we’re always more than happy to share our experiences and lessons learned. Probably ought to be a topic for a blog entry at some point…but later. Not today.

As I made my way around the room, I ran into some folks of a different flavor than we usually see at our events. Yet another step in the evolution of our group, I suppose. We’re starting to see more and more “product” based people show up. Not necessarily folks looking to sell there at the event (because they’ve read enough to know not to), but looking to expand their networks and get to know people in the industry so that at least their name gets out there and they start making connections. Solid. Very happy to help things happen in that manner.

Had quite a few conversations about our conference idea, too. Support is…well, it’s damned near overwhelming, is what it is.

Everyone is being so supportive, helpful, and I must have gotten abotu twenty different requests about “How can I volunteer?” or “How can I help?” or “How can our company help?” that I’m still kind of stunned.

Not stunned enough to not take them up on their offers though, and certainly not stunned enough to not remind you to get yourself over to http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2969/poll-it-conference-in-detroit/ and chime in. We still need feedback. We still need your input in order to make this something that’ll be worth doing.

Because we’re going to do it…that much is clear. We have to, it’s needed. Now it’s just a matter of starting to figure out the “where” and “when” while we continue fleshing out the “what”.

We’ve also started hearing from other user groups, and other folks that either have had their own conference in the past, or were thinking about doing one, and would like to join forces (which is great! remember: Voltron) with us to make things happen. Absolutely we want to hear from you as well, and keep those coming in, too.

Okay, I think that’s enough rambling for one morning.

Thanks again to everyone for coming out last night…and we look forward to seeing you at future events!

Our first event of 2012 takes place tomorrow night in the back room of the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. As always, 5:01pm start time, no cover charge, no kickbacks, just networking.

We’re approaching a few neat milestones with Detroitnet.org, and as we’re closing in on them, we’re apparently losing our minds.

But in the immortal words of Dr. Sheldon Cooper – “I am not crazy…my mother had me tested.”

So let’s get started…

As always, first thing’s first – our next event. Thursday, January 19th. That’s tomorrow night. 5:01pm start time. Royal Oak. BlackFinn. Back room. No cover charges to get in. No referral fees if you wind up hiring someone. No kickbacks from the bars. Just us, just you, and just some of the best folks in the information technology industry here in the metro Detroit area. What more can you ask for?

What, details? Fine. They’re on our site out at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/our-events/ and on LinkedIn over at http://linkd.in/uK3613

As always, we really hope to see you there…well, as long as you’re not That Guy.

We have a couple of very cool milestones that are rapidly approaching with our group.

Our event next month will mark the 10 year anniversary of the very first Detroitnet.org networking event. While yes, technically, the group has been in existence since December of 2001, the first press release and big “push” event took place on February 7th, 2002.

We’re also dangerously close to welcoming member number 3000 to our LinkedIn group. Given that it wasn’t all that long ago that we were freaking out because we had 500 members…wow. Kind of crazy.

Speaking of crazy…naturally, we’re not content to just engage the autopilot and let things fly as they are. Nooooo, of course not. We have to go and decide that it’s time to start listening to people again and think about pulling together a full blown Information Technology conference in Detroit. Yes, this is what that whole “Scene from The Godfather” post was about a couple of months ago over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2482/the-godfather/, and yes, conversations have taken place since then. A lot of very cool conversations with a lot of very good people with a lot of incredible and awesome ideas.

Now we have to start getting down to reality and making this thing happen.

So, your mission is to get on over to http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2969/poll-it-conference-in-detroit/ and give us some feedback. We hardly ever ask anything of anyone…but we desperately need feedback and information from you now. We’re not doing this as a vanity play or an ego move. None of us needs the headaches that this will inevitably trigger. Yes, we’re aware of the other conferences and events that go on around the area…so please, before you go diving into the pool of assumptions, at least make sure there’s water in it. Give us a little bit of the benefit of the doubt, and realize that we’re trying to do something…”different”…here. If we thought this was already being done, we wouldn’t do it. If there are other people/groups out there doing things that you think we should be thinking of, then we want to hear from them, and you, and have them come together with us to make this happen. This is not – and let me repeat that again for the sidelines – NOT intended to be a “detroitnet.org” conference. This isn’t about “us”, this isn’t about Bob, Dave and Jeff getting their names out there…this is…

…remember Voltron?

Cartoon…robot lions…all came together to form…well, that guy over there on the right?

That’s what this is intended to be.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

So even though we don’t like LinkedIn Open Networkers…this time, you’re allowed to be a lion to help make something really cool happen. A robot lion, even.

So…seriously, head on over to http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/2969/poll-it-conference-in-detroit/ and give us some input. We want…no, actually we need to hear from you if this is going to work.

There’s already been some great feedback received, and discussion in our LinkedIn group. But that’s just the start.

Speaking of our LinkedIn group…that’s not the only conversation taking place. We’ve got chats ranging from SOPA to wondering if Google is as evil as Twitter claims and more.

We’ve also got jobs posted, of course. And with an event tomorrow night, you might want to pop your head in and see what’s out there currently since those are from recruiters who participate in our group and show up at our events. Here’s a bit of what’s out there at the moment:
