So I think I finally figured Twitter out (yea, I know). It’s not like I over-use it now, but the sky has cleared and I think I finally “get it”.
With that said, it is absolutely amazing to me how different the cultures the two platforms are to the user-base. Literally night and day.
So this bar conversation I had this weekend, I will transcribe onto print for your reading enjoyment. With that said, here I go…

“It was the best of times…it was the worst of times…”
So, you have two articles out there in the wild today…and then some perspective from people out there running the gauntlet.
On Detnews.com, you have an article about how firms are looking outside of the state to fill jobs here now. Also today, you have a Computerworld article that talks about how huge the demand is for IT talent right now in metro Detroit.
So then why, when I’m talking with people at a Michigan Works office this morning…all unemployed, all Information Technology professionals, most of whom had an experienced background…why are they telling me that the IT market sucks?

It seems like forever and a day ago since we did our December event at Dragonmead in Warren, and everyone was so supportive of our efforts to do something cool and a little different for the troops overseas.
Well, we just got an update in from Mike (he graciously took a break from dodging sandstorms, bullets, and explosives to let us know everything arrived), and if nothing else, I’m pretty sure I won’t be complaining about the meetings that I’m trapped in for a while.
Perspective is fun, but not as much fun as Mike’s having. Depending on your definition of the word “fun”, of course…

Yeah, that’s right, I said it.
It’s “Star Wars Day”, and if you don’t understand why…go away, and don’t come back until you figure it out.
Three quick things for my fellow Star Wars geeks out there…

Something positive is always good.
…just thought I’d tell you that Mike C. from Michigan Shifting Gears shared a very touching reflection of his experience during the Michigan Shifting Gears Graduation yesterday….which was being taped by a reporter. He personally gave credit to Detroitnet.org for his securing an interview. He shared the entire experience of his walking into his first Detroitnet.org event and how scared he was and how you personally walked over and introduced him around. Just a testament to Detroitnet.org and the wonderful impact your having on lives around you!!!!
Thanks for the note, and glad you found us to be helpful, Mike. Hope to see you (and others) at future events as well.

Seriously, I’m going to need someone to tell me why this can’t work.
You get some capital together, and you go buy some bulldozers, a wrecking ball, a couple of backloaders (I went on some auction sites…I’m stunned how cheap some of that heavy equipment can be), find yourself a demolitions expert…and then you open up a destruction company.
But you’re not the one doing the destruction.
No, it’s people like me doing the destruction. Or you. Or anyone.
I read stories like this one – http://www.freep.com/article/20120415/NEWS01/304150016/For-many-kids-in-Detroit-school-zones-are-danger-zones – about how many abadoned, dangerous buildings there are near schools, and there’s a problem.
And then I realize that there are a lot of people with a lot of pent up stress and frustration. And I see an opportunity…

I’ve already done “electric boogaloo”, so yes, it had to be that title.
Almost three years ago now, as we were coming up on our first Pink Slip Party, I wrote “Lessons From a Child’s Toy” about some lessons I learned one bleary-eyed morning during a hazardous encounter between my feet and some colorful wooden blocks.
At the time, the job market was deplorable. The whole reason for that first Pink Slip Party was because people were dying for face time with recruiters, and so we figured we’d try to help. With the market as bad as it was, people were trying anything to get a job, including cramming themselves into positions that were a terrible fit for both them and the company.
Well now, three years later…another children’s toy…and another set of lessons…

By now, you’ve read our entries in the Networking Basics category, and even a few of the How Not To Suck realm.
You’ve probably started to build up a network of your own.
Well, now I’m going to tell you how to properly categorize and inventory network, so that you can take stock of where you are in the process and figure out where you need to be tweaking things to make sure you get where you want to be.
And also why we keep harping on the whole “LION” thing and why “open networking” doesn’t help you.
At all…

No, this has nothing to do with gym, tan and laundry.
Nor does a pregnant ewok named Snooki factor into the equation in any capacity.
What it does have to deal with is something that I do when I go somewhere unfamiliar to me, and something that I guess I was doing subconsciously.
But now that I’ve thought about it…maybe this networking thing really does come naturally to me after all…and maybe there’s a lesson in here for you somewhere.

“Your past is not your potential.” – Marilyn Ferguson
“None of us really changes over time; we only become more fully what we are. To put it another way, you do get wiser when you live for hundreds of years; but you also have more time to turn out as badly as your enemies always said you might” – The Vampire Lestat
“Do you really believe that there’s some stored up conflict that exists between us? There is no us. We don’t exist. ” – Martin Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank
I learned a very valuable lesson not too long ago.
Well, to be honest…I didn’t really “learn” anything…but I did have something that I’ve been telling people all along confirmed like mad. And it was both refreshing and a little gut-wrenching at the same time.
The lesson? You have to own your past so that it never threatens your present or future. You can’t lie about who you are. You can’t pretend to be something that you’re not.
Because if you try and lock your past behind a wall…eventually…somewhere…at some point in time…the mortar between the bricks will crack…
