So We Might Pull Together An Information Technology Conference In Detroit
Okay.
You’ve heard / read me rant about how many irons we have in how many different fires we have at the moment.
Well, one of those is that there are some very serious discussions underway about us putting together a large-scale Information Technology conference in Detroit.
Because there really isn’t one to speak of.
And yes, this is what that whole “Godfather” moment thing has been about for the past couple of months.
But you know us…if we’re going to do something, then it’s going to have to be done right.
And of course, by “right”, we mean “the way that works the best for all of you”.
So, here we are…yet again…looking for some feedback and input from you…
Thoughts On Our Pink Slip Party Events

…so, we’re thinking about tweaking our Pink Slip Party events a bit, and we’d like to get some input from you about it before we go screwing anything up.
Because you know us…we will.
And so we’re throwing this out here in an attempt to get you to save us from ourselves…
Separating Hype and Reality – Companies Moving Downtown
I’m curious.
I’ve had some people show up in my inbox or on my phone wanting to chat about companies moving downtown.
It could be that their company has already announced a move downtown, or that their company already has moved downtown, or that they’ve heard through the grapevine that it’s coming…
…and they’re not all happy about it.
We’re Not Selling Out. Honest.
As always, if you’re reading this on LinkedIn, Facebook, or anywhere else that picks up our RSS feed…please click through to our site to view this original posting so that you can actually vote and leave us some feedback. Because, seriously, we really do listen…but you have to say something before we can hear it.
We’ve pretty much kept the whole “sponsor” thing at arm’s length. We still turn down referral fees from recruiters. We still haven’t taken a dime from any of the locations that we hold events. As you know directly, we also don’t charge people to attend our events.
And we’re certainly not planning on changing any of those things.
But we also have lofty goals and aspirations of what we want our events…or at least some of them…to be, and we think we may have come up with an acceptable solution (both for us, and you) that may work. So let’s talk about this for a moment…
The Unofficially Official “There Has GOT To Be A Better Way” Moment.
Please note: if you’re reading this on Facebook, LinkedIn, or anywhere else that picks up an RSS feed from us, please take a moment to click through to our site, view the original, and let us know what you’re thinking. You can only do that directly on our site.
As we continue to be horribly frustrated by LinkedIn.com’s constant cycle of “suck”, we’re thinking about making some changes here to Detroitnet.org that would enable us to be a little more self-reliant.
By necessity…we’ll probably always have to have a “presence” group on LinkedIn…but we’d like to remove as many dependencies on it as is humanly possible. It’s a decent tool, and a nice platform…but it keeps breaking and leaving us (and you) in the lurch, and so we figured…well, there has got to be a better way to do things.
But let’s be realistic – before we bother doing anything, it would probably be a good idea to see if you’d even use what we have in mind before we invest the time, effort and energy into it. Oh, and the other thing to remember is that the things we’re thinking about putting in place…like everything else we do, would be free for you to use. We’re still not going to turn into “that group”.
So if you’ve got a minute to give us your feedback…
Interested in a Downtown Event and a Red Wings Game?
Make sure you get to the “cast a vote” part of this, because we want your feedback.
Okay…so we try and keep a very huge and clearly defined line in the sand between “Detroitnet.org” and “Anything involving money”. We do so for a number of reasons, but primarily because we’re absolutely committed to doing what we do in a way that keeps what we do absolutely free for anyone that wants to attend our events.
We’re going to try an experiment. We’re going to pull together an event downtown. The event will, like all of our events, be absolutely and completely free to attend for anyone that wants to show up for what will basically be one of our normal networking events like the ones at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. So, still on track with everything we do – no cover charges, no fees, no anything. Just a good, solid networking event.
But there happens to be a Red Wings game on the night that we’re trying to pull this all together…and there are these connections that we’ve made recently that might be able to help us with the “fun and different” part of the equation…
Your Opinion, Please: Out of State Jobs
There’s been some discussion lately in our LinkedIn group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=91763) about whether or not we should permit out of state jobs to be posted. Personally, we say “no”, because we’re all about trying to help things in this area get better…but we’re curious as to your thoughts. To be clear, we’re not talking about companies that are based out of state posting jobs here in metro Detroit – no, we’re good with those…
Tell Detroitnet.org Where To Go!
We’ve been asked to take our events on the road, and start hitting some areas outside of Royal Oak and Novi. So, if it were up to you…what location would you like to see us get to?
