Bad Resume Guy 2: Is It Me You’re Looking For?

May 13th, 2012 by Dave

lionelrichieposter

So this SEO guy walks into a bar, grill, pub, public house, night club, Irish bar, bartender, drinks, beer, wine, liquor, shots, booze…

You read Bad Resume Guy and took the advice in it.

You’ve got multiple versions of your resume at the ready.

You think you’re all set, but you’re not getting the responses or the traction with it that you hoped you would.

I guess it’s time to talk about Search Engine Optimization, because it’s not just for websites folks…

The Dating Corollary: I Can Change and Other Lies

April 16th, 2012 by Dave

chuck-woolery1

You did it.

You’ve finally had enough.

You’re pulling the trigger, and you’re ending the relationship.

You’ve finally realized that the grass really is greener over on the other side of that fence, and so it’s time to make a change.

Maybe you didn’t even mean for it to happen this way.  Maybe you just randomly met someone in a bar one night, and one thing led to another and now you’ve realized that you’ll be happier with them than you’ll ever be in your current relationship.

And then…when you drop the hammer…it starts.  “Things can change”, “things can be better”, “things can be different”, “what would it take to keep you?”

[sigh] Hold firm, cowboy.  Nobody said break ups were easy…

So, you’re coming to the event tomorrow night at the BlackFinn, right?

And because you’re a cool person who keeps tabs on our LinkedIn group on a regular basis, you already know that there might be a camera crew there, right?

But that doesn’t freak you out, right?

Right?  Hey – where the hell’d you go?

Oh…there you are.  Get OUT of the corner, already.  Sheesh.

Okay, so let me go ahead and talk you down off the ledge and out into the middle of the room again…

The New and Improved 10 Commandments of Networking

December 1st, 2011 by Dave

As with everything that we do, this has evolved over the years.

Because we don’t believe in revisionist history, you can always still find the original version over at http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/68/the-ten-commandments-of-networking/ if you’re so inclined…but this version’s been updated.

Why?  Because it needed to be.  It’s been two and a half years since that first version was written, and things have changed since then.  We’ve also been doing some speaking engagements using this as the foundation of our presentation and discussion flow, and we’ve gotten some great feedback from people.  And…well, we also noticed that we might’ve been a little snarky about some personal things going on at the time the original was published, and so we decided it was time for an update to the version here on the site as well…

Don’t Be That Guy – The MBA Candidate

August 24th, 2011 by Dave

“If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.” – Martin Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank.

“I’m working on my MBA…” – a former coworker

There are so many ways to cover this topic…so many possible titles.

It was almost “The Pretty Pony Princess” Guy because of the ego stroking demanded.

Then it was going to be “The Friend Zone” Guy because of the way the recruiters get dealt with.

After that, it was “It’s not really cheating until…” Guy because…well, that’ll be clear momentarily.

But then…like all entries that wind up being the way they need to be…it hit me.  Not because I thought about it until it made sense…but because I stopped thinking about it.

…and really, that’s the problem with this particular That Guy – they’ve stopped thinking about anyone other than themselves…

Thoughts On Basements and Networks

April 20th, 2011 by Dave

“Those who fail to plan…should plan to fail.” - unattributed, many sources

“I am never doing that again…and this time, I really mean it!” - me, the day after every St Patrick’s day

I’ve mentioned a few times in past entries, I recently bought a new house.  A side effect of that, naturally, is that all of the stuff that’s been accumulated over the years now has to also be dealt with in regards to the new home.  The walls of books.  The cabinets full of DVDs.  Posters on the walls.  TVs, Tivos, gaming systems and all of the cabling and wiring that goes along with them…oh my god…seriously, it has to be miles of wiring and cabling.  Two separate wireless networks.  Routers here and there.  Repeaters sprinkled around to improve signal strength.  Cables running down cold air returns to fix that one spot that wireless just couldn’t hang…

…hmmm.  It seems that my network has gotten to be a little out of control because I didn’t plan properly.  Wonder if there’s a metaphor there…

Don’t Be That Guy: The Unprepared Graduate

April 13th, 2011 by Dave

I’ll spare you my horrific karaoke rendition of “the children are our future”.

You’re welcome.

One of the things that I did recently was a return engagement with a class over at Lawrence Tech.  It’s something that I’ve done a few times now over the years, and I really genuinely enjoy it.  Basically, it comes down to speaking to a group of students about the importance of networking and how it can help you.

Well, at least that’s how it startedRead the rest of this entry »

Don’t Be That Guy – The Bad Candidate

March 2nd, 2011 by Dave

I didn’t write this one.  I mean, I’m copying and pasting the content in here…but this comes in from…oh, let’s just say it’s “An IT recruiter in the Detroit market” and leave it at that.  I desperately wanted to call it “The Recruiter Strikes Back 2: Electric Boogaloo”…but I’ll stick with the one that it had when it came in.  Between this entry and The Recruiter Strikes Back…I think we’ve got some pretty good guidelines for you job seekers out there dealing with recruiters.

To answer the two obvious questions…

Yes, I know who it is that wrote it.

No, I’m not going to tell you who it is.

With that, I give you…

Don’t Be That Guy: Overblown Sense of Entitlement Guy

January 5th, 2011 by Dave

If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.” – Martin Blank

The world has moved on.” – Stephen King, The Dark Tower series

Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you’re entitled to.” – Colonel Nathan Jessep in “A Few Good Men”

There are idiots walking among us, and they’re making it harder for some of you to find a job.

Therefore, it’s time to talk about them – the job seekers out there with unrealistic expectations and an overblown sense of entitlement.
