How Not To Suck At Interviewing For A Job Part 3

February 22nd, 2012 by Bob

no_suck

Congratulations, you’ve made it past the first hurdle.

You’ve gotten past the gatekeepers, resume screeners, candidate tracking systems, and have gotten a call or email that someone would actually like to talk to you about hiring you for a job that they have open.

So Dave did a phenomenal job with part 1 and part 2 of “How not to suck at Interviewing for a Job” but as things happen in the world, things change and I wanted to add a couple things I thought were common sense, but I find out they are not…

Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee

February 21st, 2012 by Dave

So, this ought to be entertaining, if nothing else.

I’ve been asked to moderate a panel discussion next Thursday night (March 1st) on Using Social Media to Find Your Next Position/Employee.

I know, I know…it’s not often that someone thinks of me when it comes to anything involving the word “moderate”, but…well…it kind of makes sense.

See, here’s how this works…

A Few Cool Finds From Last Night

February 17th, 2012 by Dave

Okay, so now that I’ve had a couple cups of coffee and my head’s not quite as fuzzy as it was earlier this morning…I wanted to recap a few conversations that were had last night.

As I mentioned earlier on, the group dynamic is shifting yet again…which is great.  Sure, there are still job seekers.  Sure, there are still recruiters.  But more and more we’re getting back to the foundation of what Detroitnet.org always was – networking.  So to have folks from companies showing up last night just looking to make business contacts, as well as more people just looking to do the same and expand their network in the industry a bit…awesome.

So let’s talk about a few of those cool finds from last night…

Event Recap, Supporting The Troops, Events This Weekend and More

February 17th, 2012 by Dave

One of these days, we really are going to have to get better about remembering to take pictures at our events.

Big shout out and “thank you” to Rochester Mills Brewing Company for hosting last night’s event.  We couldn’t possibly be any happier with the space, the service, the environment, or any other factor, really.

And, of course, a thank you to everyone that made it to the event last night.  Lots of new faces, and we’re starting to see more and more businesses looking to branch out and make contacts in the industry…always a positive.

I would definitely plan on us having more events there in the future…that’s a no-brainer.

In other news, Denise Ilitch Designs is doing something very cool to help Michigan Military Brides, and we’re naturally all about helping get the word out.

Then there’s the gaggle of random events taking place tonight and throughout the weekend that we thought you might want to know about…

February 16th, 2012 by Dave

didesigns

So, continuing in the vein of what we did with our “Support the Troops” efforts for our December event, along comes Denise Ilitch Designs wanting to do something very cool for Michigan Military Brides.  Like providing the jewelry from its luxurious wedding line to women serving in the military or marrying someone currently serving in the military on their wedding day.

Naturally, we want to help them.

So, read on for the full details…

LAST CALL Casual Networking Event Tonight, Coat Check Added

February 16th, 2012 by Dave

Last call folks.

We’ve got our event tonight at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills.  Look forward to seeing everyone there.  And the rumor mill has it that there might be a few folks who were happily working away at Compuware until just recently that might have suddenly found themselves in the market looking for a new job.

Well…not that you need one for our events, but the invitation’s extended.  There will be plenty of recruiters looking to hire people at our event tonight, so don’t be shy.  I know it’s rough, and I know it sucks the life out of you when you get caught short like that…but, seriously, we’ve all been there.  Don’t sweat it.  C’mon out and let one of us buy you a beer and get your ass back to work as soon as is humanly possible.

So, the details for tonight…

Coming Tomorrow Night? Plus Jobs, Updates and More for 2/15/2012

February 15th, 2012 by Dave

There’s an awful lot going on these days.

We have our event tomorrow (that’s Thursday, for those of you keeping score at home) night up at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills.  A few blog entries went live.  Bob utterly failed on Star Wars night at the Pistons game last Friday.  I got asked to be a moderator for a panel discussion on using social media to find a job…

…yes, I’ll just let that one marinate for a moment.

Me.  Moderator.  Panel discussion.

Trust me, Bob and Jeff are both already planning on multiple video cameras being present…and Jeff’s frantically scouring the internet for a high enough voltage shock collar that they can slip on me after a few pre-event drinks that night…

How Not To Suck At Interviewing For A Job, Part II

February 10th, 2012 by Dave

Congratulations, you’ve made it past the first hurdle.

You’ve gotten past the gatekeepers, resume screeners, candidate tracking systems, and have gotten a call or email that someone would actually like to talk to you about hiring you for a job that they have open.

Now, let’s not kid ourselves – even though you’ve made it past the whirling blades of death at the entrance to the secret cave containing the buried treasure…there are still a lot of obstacles to be handled before you can start deciding what you need to pack in your cardbox box for your first day at the office to make it feel like “you”.

Let’s at least make it through the interview first.

Yesterday we got you through the prep work before the interview, so now let’s tackle the interview itself…
