Welcome to Detroitnet.org!
Who We Are
Founded in 2001 by a group of Information Technology professionals in Metro Detroit, Detroitnet.org was at the time, the “anti-group”.
They simply wanted to attend networking functions where they were surrounded by like-minded people. They didn’t want to wake up at 7AM to give leads to florists. They didn’t want to pay $20 for a $7 lunch. They didn’t want to pay $15 to watch someone promote their company. And most importantly, they didn’t want to be hounded by MLM people.
Thus, Detroitnet.org was born.
What We Do
Today, Detroitnet.org strives to continue the tradition in Metro Detroit to provide an online and offline venue for professionals in and around the Information Technology industry to network with other IT folks in the most simplest of forums.
You will find an assortment of individuals that attend our events, everyone from enterprise sales professionals, network admins, software developers, recruiters, IT security pros, and even a CIO from time to time.
The best part? All events are free. There are no membership dues. Your name will never be sold to sponsors (because there are none). You will never have to listen to a 30-second commercial. You will never be bombarded by overzealous salespeople. You will never have to be subjected to guest speakers. The only thing we ask is that you are a professional in or around the Information Technology industry and Don’t Be That Guy. So simply show up, grab a drink, introduce yourself and then the rest is up to you.
We do two kinds of events in the metro Detroit area – our casual networking events and our Pink Slip Party events. Both are great, well attended events for meeting some of the best and brightest folks in the Information Technology realm in the area, but they do each have distinct purposes. Our casual networking events are designed to foster relationships and help folks in the information technology industry build connections. Our Pink Slip Party events are specifically geared more towards helping people find jobs. That being said, networking still takes place at our Pink Slip Party events and jobs are still found at our casual networking events, so it really just depends on which of our events is taking place at a time and venue that works for you. It’s all about letting professionals in the IT industry here in metro Detroit get together and network after work with each other in a casual, productive manner.
In either case, everything’s still free. We don’t expect you to pay a cover charge to walk into a bar. We don’t take kickbacks from the locations that we hold events. We don’t take referral fees or anything else from the recruiters that are looking to hire people. You don’t have to wear a color coded nametag at our casual networking events because everyone in the room is in the industry that you care about. This really is nothing more (or less) than the kind of group we were always looking for but could never find…along with a little bit of burning off some bad karma from our early 20′s.
We do it because of reasons like this, which we got in via email recently:
“The reason for my email today is to say thanks. Thanks for putting together such a great website. I read almost everything that was posted, especially what to do and not to do your first time around. The suggestions and tips listed were not only very valuable for the upcoming event but also helped me with the rest of my overall job hunting endeavors. I’ve been all over the web and I can’t say enough about how great it was to see everything one needs all in one spot. Its like having a big brother with tons of resources minus the slugs on the arm. I can’t wait till next weeks event and am eager to make some new friends and acquaintances.”
Where We Do It
Our events take place all around the metro Detroit area. You can also find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and join us on LinkedIn. At a minimum, we recommend connecting with us on LinkedIn and Facebook, as events, jobs, discussions, and other items of interest take place in particular on those two venues. We’re just starting to use Twitter more as a means of communicating out jobs that come to our attention, so if that’s what you’re looking for, then you’ll want to hook up with us there, too.
Welcome to Detroitnet.org!
Please respect that the members of Detroitnet.org do not want MLM companies or representatives pitching to the guests. Our members are looking for professional networking opportunities or perhaps a new job. Do not attend if you represent the following companies: Amway, World Ventures, YTB, Mary Kay, NuSkin, World Financial Group, PrePaid Legal or others on this list. Detroitnet.org events are not the forum for MLMs. Sign up with this group.
